چکیده

In this work, results are given for controlling waves arbitrarily inside a lattice with spatially variant self-collimation. To demonstrate the concept, an unguided beam was made to flow around a 90◦ bend without scattering due to the bend or the spatial variance. Control of the field was achieved by spatially varying the orientation of the unit cells throughout a self-collimating photonic crystal, but in a manner that almost completely eliminated deformations to the size and shape of the unit cells. The device was all-dielectric, monolithic, and made from an ordinary dielectric with low relative permittivity (εr = 2.45). It was manufactured by fused deposition modeling, a form of 3D printing, and its performance confirmed experimentally at around 15 GHz.

Broadband diffraction management and self-collimation of white light in photonic lattices.

We introduce periodic photonic structures where the strength of diffraction can be managed in a very broad frequency range. We show how to design arrays of curved waveguides where light beams experience wavelength-independent normal, anomalous, or zero diffraction. Our results suggest opportunities for efficient self-collimation, focusing, and reshaping of beams produced by white-light and supe...

Abundance of Mosaic Patterns for CNN with Spatially Variant Templates

This work investigates the complexity of one-dimensional cellular neural network mosaic patterns with spatially variant templates on finite and infinite lattices. Various boundary conditions are considered for finite lattices and the exact number of mosaic patterns is computed precisely. The entropy of mosaic patterns with periodic templates can also be calculated for infinite lattices. Further...

Analytical Solution to 3D SPECT Reconstruction with Non-uniform Attenuation, Scatter, and Spatially-variant Resolution Variation for Variable Focal-length Fan-beam Collimators

In the past decades, analytical (non-iterative) methods have been extensively investigated and developed for the reconstruction of three-dimensional (3D) single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). However, it becomes possible only recently when the exact analytic non-uniform attenuation reconstruction algorithm was derived. Based on the explicit inversion formula for the attenuated Rad...

Sequential Self-Folding Structures by 3D Printed Digital Shape Memory Polymers

Folding is ubiquitous in nature with examples ranging from the formation of cellular components to winged insects. It finds technological applications including packaging of solar cells and space structures, deployable biomedical devices, and self-assembling robots and airbags. Here we demonstrate sequential self-folding structures realized by thermal activation of spatially-variable patterns t...

Spatially variant periodic structures in electromagnetics.

Spatial transforms are a popular technique for designing periodic structures that are macroscopically inhomogeneous. The structures are often required to be anisotropic, provide a magnetic response, and to have extreme values for the constitutive parameters in Maxwell's equations. Metamaterials and photonic crystals are capable of providing these, although sometimes only approximately. The prob...
